Anti Freeze Valves

Posted on November 1, 2022

In this video we go over the basics of anti freeze valves so you know what they’re used for and how they work.

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on anti-freeze valves! By the end of this read, you’ll have a solid understanding of what anti-freeze valves are and why they’re crucial in certain installations.

When you’re out on site, you’ll receive two boxes containing the essential components for your anti-freeze system. Let’s delve into what these anti-freeze valves are all about.

Anti-freeze valves have undergone some changes over time. They used to come with union fittings, but now they feature compression fittings, making installation significantly easier for installers like you.

The Functionality of Anti-Freeze Valves

Anti-freeze valves play a critical role in preventing freezing within your system. Here’s how they work:

  • Location: They’re positioned outside next to the outdoor unit, typically at the lowest point of the system.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: The valve opens when the water temperature hits three degrees Celsius and closes when it rises to four degrees Celsius.
  • Preventing Freezing: By allowing water out at the right temperatures, they prevent freezing within the system, especially during power outages when the unit can’t defrost itself.

Installation Tips and Measurements

Proper installation is key to the effectiveness of anti-freeze valves:

  • Measurement Guidelines: Flow and return pipes should be 100 millimetres apart, with a distance of 150 millimetres from the floor.
  • Insulation: When insulating the pipes, ensure that the air admittance on the top of the valve remains unobstructed. This allows for proper air circulation, crucial during freezing conditions.
